Emmerdale star takes swipe at EastEnders after joining ITV soap from BBC rival

Emmerdale star Joe Absolom, who plays villain Ray Walters, has spoke of how much he enjoys working on the ITV soap, having previously been on BBC’s EastEnders

Joe Absolom has declared starring in Emmerdale is more fun than EastEnders. The actor reckons the ITV soap boasts nicer staff and is a lot more enjoyable.

Telly favourite Joe shot to fame on EastEnders in 1997 as troubled Matthew Rose. His big storyline was the manslaughter of Saskia Duncan alongside Martin Kemp as Steve Owen.

It was a dream job but it wasn’t much of a laugh.

In a swipe at the BBC soap, he said: “When I was on EastEnders, it was like, ‘That’s your time, be there’. It was like a job, which was fine.

“I remember everyone saying Emmerdale were the nicest bunch. Now I’m here, I can believe that’s true.”

Joe joined Emmerdale earlier this year as villain Ray Walters.

Whenever he’s on set, he gets treated really well.

Joe said: “It’s really nice. They really look after you. It’s better than the BBC did. It’s a nice place. They pick me up. I get my own cup. I’ve got my own pass so I can get into the building whenever I want.

“And when I get lost, people show me where to go.”

Joe also loves playing Ray because he gets to be nasty.

He added: “It’s really good fun. When you get good scenes, it’s really good. It’s fun to be horrible!”
